2-Component Polyurethane Paint / 2C PUR

What is 2-part boat paint?

- 2-K paint for aluminium, steel, wood, GRP and old GRP -

If you want a good result when painting your boat and decide to buy 2-part boat paint, you can't go wrong with bi-component paints. Although two-component paints are more expensive than one-component paints and can require slightly more effort to apply, the advantages are definitely worthwhile, including scratch resistance, great coverage and tough against external factors such as those caused by fuels, oils or light acids and alkalis.

But what makes these paints so reliable? Extremely robust synthetic resin paints have been used in recreational boating for many years and can be applied to almost all substrate materials such as aluminium, steel, wood, GRP and old GRP. These so-called reactive paints consist of a solvent (either solvent or aqueous solution) and a synthetic resin such as polyurethane (PUR paint), alkyd resin or acrylic resin.

In the curing process, they react with air/moisture or an additional hardener component. With a 1-component paint the hardener is already added, 2-component paints require the hardener to be added shortly before use and thoroughly stirred. Spray versions of both types are available. Two-component spray paints must be shaken thoroughly before use.

Make sure you select the right boat paint primer for the best bond between the substrate and paint. Manufacturers offer matching/coordinated products that result in a very resistant, so-called paint system. Sometimes single or two-component systems are confused with single or multi-layer systems. These are two different techniques: Multi-coat paint systems consist of a primer or basecoat and a matching topcoat or clearcoat. 1-K and 2-K paints can of course also be applied in one or more coats.

1-component paint or 2-component paint?

- 2-Part Boat Paint and 1-Part Paint in Comparison -

Are you wondering what the benefits of 2-component paint are? Let's take a quick look at all the advantages and disadvantages: compared to one-component boat paint, 2-component yacht paints are particularly hard and their gloss lasts longer. They are less sensitive to impacts and mechanical stress and reliably withstand the effects of fuels, oils and salt water. This makes 2-component boat paints particularly suitable for painting the bilge, bulkheads or stowage spaces. However, this has its price: 2-component polyurethane paints (2K-PUR varnish) are more expensive and more complicated to apply. Drying time, for example, is significantly longer than with the 1-K variant. To prevent your boat paint from hardening during application, only work on small areas or mix small amounts of paint at a time. Paint rollers should only be used once and brushes must be carefully cleaned with thinner - even when painting, paint can harden between the brush hairs and leave messy marks. Depending on the condition and quality of the substrate, very careful preparatory work must be carried out. Information on this is provided by the manufacturers of the products.

How do you apply 2-component paint on a boat?

- Painting correctly: applying 2-component boat paint -

How do you correctly apply 2-part paint? Unlike antifouling, which should be renewed almost every season depending on how and where you sail your boat, high-quality boat paint lasts much longer. If the outer skin of your boat becomes dull and loses its shine, or small cracks and orange peel form, then it is time for a new coat of paint. For this you need a 2-component boat paint (contains the basecoat plus hardener), paint tape, paint roller or brush, dust cloth, descaler or degreaser and, if required, a thinner.

Regardless of whether you only want to repaint your deck or if painting under the waterline - using 2-component paints should not be done at temperatures below 10° C. Lower temperatures lead to drying and curing problems, as the chemical reaction cannot take place. If temperatures drop only for a short moment, this can also lead to problems. It is essential to remove sources of dust in preparation. A water spray gun can also be used for dust control. The floor can also be lightly dampened so that no dust is lifted into the air. It is essential that you follow the manufacturer's instructions and wear protective clothing because most paints contain solvents that are harmful to human health.

Areas that are not to be coated must be covered with painters tape, be sure to also mask off silicone. The substrate is then carefully decalcified and degreased and then rinsed with water. Do not use soap-based cleaners or scouring agents, as they contain fatty acids and are not suitable for dissolving grease. INTERNATIONAL SUPER CLEANER is the best cleaner for this purpose. Mix the components (varnish and hardener) together in a specific ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions directly before application. One litre of 2K paint is usually enough for an area of 12 m2. However, only mix as much paint as is needed for the work step - once both components are mixed, the curing process cannot be stopped. Stir the mixture carefully, better too long than too short, at least one minute.

The maximum processing time for a 2-component boat coating is 4 - 5 hours. This processing time may vary depending on the product. Only during this time is optimal application possible. Even if the paint still looks viscous enough, the workability and thus the result will deteriorate after this time has elapsed. Sometimes the paint may already begin to harden in the brush hairs, which can lead to bad results. Coat your brush or roller with paint before the first application to remove any loose hairs or fluff. Manufacturers recommend at least two thin coats to achieve a good result. After about one hour the paint will be dust-dry, after twelve hours the paint tape can be removed. However, it takes five to seven days for everything to reach its final hardness.

When painting your boat, the boat paint should be applied in a so-called cross coat: In the case of the hull, start by applying paint perpendicular to the waterline, covering a small area at a time, making sure to "finish" in the original direction. If you are working with a brush, it should be moved over the surface at an angle of 45° with only light pressure. For a better result, gently sand each layer with a sander and remove dust. The penultimate coat should already be well cured and sanded again with fine P400 or P600 sandpaper.
