The 20 year old Boyan Slat from Holland has thought about the topic plastic waste in oceans very early and has developed a concept on how to extract 7,25 Billion kilogram waste out of the oceans in the next 5 years. What was laughed at in the beginning as the fantasies of a teenager, is now supported by hundreds of experts, scientists and international companies. His concept includes a big, swimming filter which is only 3m deep in the water and can collect the plastic waste. The filter is fixed to a platform which is attached to the ocean bottom. The construction also includes side arms which are supposed to collect the plastic waste. The waste is supposed to be transported by the natural occuring current, which already build large plastic carpets in the ocean, and led directly into the Ocean Cleanup Construction. Due to the shallow depth of the construction, ocean mammals can swim underneath it and are not endangered. The collected plastic is supposed to be recycled and reused.
